In this project, I employed metaphor, in which butterfly represents the awakening of female consciousness.
This series of photos describes the whole process of female consciousness: birth, growth, broken after being hit, self-examination and rebirth. It’s inspired by my own experiences, but I made some modifications with artistic means. The photograph that is filled with darkness represents the chaos before consciousness awakens. The sphere represents a nascent state, which means “beginning”.The photograph with the blurred silhouette shadow is actually the body of the butterfly. Before the wings came out, they represented the growth and transformation of female consciousness. I use blur technique to express the struggles and changes. After transformation, butterflies and insects have a mature body, which is also a concrete embodiment of the mature female consciousness. That is to say, mature body consists with mature consciousness of women. What she is staring at is both a mirror for self-reflection and a door to a better self. The 999 butterflies above represent a woman's desire for a better self. The last picture is the beginning as well as the end. Female consciousness of the first "body", or shape, in fact is influenced by secular ideas, as she was overturned after setbacks and misfortune. The “overturn” here can also be said as a kind of death, and restructured female consciousness after the fall is her rebirth. This abstract story actually coincides with my own experience, but I made it poetic.
The photos in this series are a reincarnation, a kind of my reflection and poetic expression of my own life experiences and the experiences of women around me.
